Settled in 1780 Shively was mostly farms like much of Jefferson County at the time. Shively had been named after Christian William Shively one of the areas early landowners. Christian Shively established a mill in 1810, on what is known today as Mill Creek. He also donated land in 1816 for a church to be built which is known today as Parkview Methodist.
The areas post office opened in 1902 with Shively for its name. Although the first choice for Shively’s name had been St. Helen, after the Catholic Church that had been established in 1897, that name had already been taken. In 1904 Louisville extended a streetcar line into the Shively area.
After prohibition, eight whiskey distilleries opened in the Shively area. In 1938 Shively was incorporated to avoid being annexed by Louisville. Four days later Shively annexed the distilleries and acquired a large sum of money. Due to increases in taxes and changes in consumer taste in the 1960’s most of the distilleries in the Shively area were closed, which caused Shively to go from having budget surpluses to budget shortfalls.
In 1984 Shively’s Police Chief Michael Donio admitted to taking bribes that allowed prostitution into the area. Because of this scandal, Shively became known as Lively Shively. With businesses moving into the area as well as public works projects, Shively’s fortunes have begun to turn around.
Shively is conveniently located close to downtown, the Ohio River, and Louisville’s International Airport. The southern Louisville area’s housing options include older houses on tree-lined streets and subdivisions with starter priced homes.
