Now with the completion of Shawnee Park in 1892, residential areas began to spring up all around. The city of Louisville annexed Shawnee in 1895 and extended the streetcar line into the area.
An early amusement park named Fontaine Ferry Park was located in the Shawnee area from 1905 until 1969. The amusement park was closed during the first part of integration due to race riots that took place there. With the closing of Fontaine Ferry Park this left Louisville without an amusement park until Kentucky Kingdom was opened in the 1980’s.
With Shawnee Park at the heart of its community, Shawnee’s large homes on shaded streets include some of Louisville’s best examples of late-19th-century architecture.
