Starting as Fort Nelson in 1781, downtown Louisville is the oldest part of our great city. By 1830 with a growing population over 10,000, Louisville passed Lexington as the largest city in Kentucky. To keep up with the city's growth the Kenyon Building was completed in 1886 followed by the Columbia Building in 1890 thus providing Downtown Louisville with it's first of many skyscrapers to come. Today there are many skyscrapers in Downtown Louisville, as well as 12 buildings that stand over 300 feet tall.
Downtown Louisville continues to grow. In 1998 Louisville expanded its Waterfront Park and completed Slugger Field. The much anticipated KFC YUM! Center opened its doors on October 10, 2010 and is a basketball and multipurpose arena that can seat 22,500 fans. The KFC Yum! Center is home to the Louisville Cardinals Basketball Team. GO CARDS! Soon, The Indiana side of the bridge will be opening allowing pedestrian access from both sides of the river. Other downtown hot spots include Fourth Street Live, The Muhammad Ali Center, The Louisville Slugger Museum as well as many museums and theatres.
