Anchorage is a beautiful historic city located in Eastern Jefferson County. Today’s Anchorage was also known as Hite’s Mill, named after Isaac Hite the original holder of the land grant in 1773. The grounds of Central State Hospital and E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park are part of the original land grant.
Anchorage’s nautical name is a bit odd; it came from the estate of James W. Goslee a riverboat captain who had been an early resident of the city.
Some of Louisville’s wealthier citizens built summer homes in Anchorage because it was heavily shaded and had cooler temperatures than Downtown Louisville.
Designated as a historic district in 1982 by the U.S. Department of the Interior, and listed on the National Register, Anchorage boasts Victorian homes on large home sites.
John Schnatter the founder of Papa John’s Pizza is a resident of Anchorage and has restored some of the cities historical buildings. In June 2008 a hiking trail opened known as the Anchorage Trail.
As you drive through the tree-lined streets of Anchorage you will see some beautiful historic homes and possibly a horse trotting beside you while enjoying the peace and serenity that Anchorage has to offer. Anchorage is located within the busy east end of Louisville with plenty of shopping and restaurants close at hand.
The city of Anchorage contains its own public school district. This independent, one-school district consistently ranks at the top among Kentucky schools in State-mandated test scores.
