St. Matthews is located eight miles East of Downtown Louisville and is the 20th largest city in Kentucky. St. Matthews was first settled by Colonial James John Floyd and its population had been mostly European Americans.
St. Matthews began development in the early 19th century. Because of the many plantations in the area and the produce they grew, St. Matthews became known as the garden of the state.
St. Matthews was originally called Gilman’s Point in the 1840’s, after a local tavern owner. St. Matthews Episcopal Church, the areas first church, emerged in 1850. With the opening of a post office in 1851, St. Matthews was adopted as the name of the city replacing Gilman’s Point.
Established in 1882 Holy Trinity is the oldest Catholic Church in St. Matthews. In association with the church, Trinity High School was established later in 1953.
Well into the 20th century the St. Matthews economy was all agricultural. The area had been home to the St. Matthews Produce Exchange from 1910 to1946. St. Matthews’ first bank was established in 1905.
In the 1920’s development began on a modern shopping area which would later include the Vogue Theater opening in 1938. St. Matthews’ growth had been accelerated by the great Ohio River flood of 1937. The city of St. Matthews was incorporated in the 1950’s. Also opening around the same time was Louisville’s first indoor shopping mall, Mall St. Matthews.
St. Matthews has been the east end business anchor for more than a century. St. Matthews includes a mix of traditional homes on tree-lined streets, apartment complexes and condominium developments near the area’s commercial businesses. Shelbyville and Lexington Roads are the main thoroughfares. Show Less...
